As a principal of Citizens For Great Falls who previously has engaged with VDOT, current and former Dranesville Supervisors, our State Senator (present and past), State Delegate, Virginia Highway Commissioner, Virginia Transportation Secretary, the Governor, and the late Congressman Connolly regarding the Walker Road bridge replacement project, I remain concerned about the safety conditions associated with this project.
Safety has always been the primary concern regarding the replacement of the existing smaller bridge with a significantly larger structure. The removal of the yield sign at the bridge, along with wider two-way traffic lanes, is likely to result in increased vehicle speeds, a conclusion supported by Federal Highway Administration findings that indicate that wider roads encourage higher speeds.
It is disappointing that repeated community concerns and those raised by elected officials were not addressed by VDOT and their bridge consultant. The potential for higher speeds approaching the sharp curve at Walker Mill Road just north of the bridge raises substantial safety concerns due to the increased risk of crashes and the previously reported history of vehicle crashes at this intersection. It has been described to officials as a Zone of Conflict. (see Red Box in image).
Now that the bridge is open, I urge all drivers to exercise heightened caution when crossing the bridge, particularly in the vicinity of the sharp curve at Walker Mill Road. Drive safely, everyone.
